Electrical Panel Labeling Requirements: NEC 408.4 Circuit Directories and Panelboard Marking

"Panel labeling" is one of the most cited electrical inspection items because the National Electrical Code is unusually specific about it — and because it is so easy to let slide during a busy fit-out.

NEC 408.4(A): The Circuit Directory

Every circuit and circuit modification must be legibly identified as to its clear, evident, and specific purpose, with enough detail to distinguish it from all others, and the identification must be included in a circuit directory at each panelboard. Two details trip people up: spare positions must be described as spare, and the directory may not depend on transient conditions of occupancy — "Jim's office" fails; "NW corner office receptacles" passes.

NEC 408.4(B): Where the Power Comes From

Since the 2011 cycle, panelboards fed from a remote source must be field-marked with the device or equipment where the power supply originates. In plain terms: "FED FROM MDP-1, CIRCUIT 12". This is a permanent plate on the panel exterior, not a note in the directory — an engraved lamacoid screwed or stuck to the deadfront is the accepted standard.

Note the 110.21(B) language: field-applied labels must be permanently affixed and not handwritten (except for content subject to change). That wording is why taped-on paper and marker on the deadfront draw corrections.

Meeting the Requirements Durably

The typical package for a commercial panel is: a typed circuit directory card in the door sleeve, an engraved panel ID plate ("PANEL LP-2, 208/120V 3Ø 4W"), a "FED FROM" plate, and any required hazard labels. Engraved two-ply plastic is favored for the plates because it cannot smear, fade, or peel off a warm deadfront — and it looks like the work of a contractor who expects to pass inspection the first time.
