A nameplate is the one document guaranteed to still be with the machine in 30 years. Motors from the 1950s are rewound today using nothing but the data on a bronze plate — that is the durability bar a nameplate is expected to meet.

What the Rules Require

NEC 110.21(A) requires the manufacturer's name, trademark, or descriptive marking on electrical equipment, and the marking must have durability adequate for the environment. Product standards go further: motors carry the full NEMA MG-1 nameplate data set (HP, voltage, FLA, RPM, frame, service factor), industrial control panels list supply voltage, phase, frequency, and short-circuit current rating, and machinery covered by NFPA 79 carries similar electrical nameplate data at the incoming supply.

Materials That Meet the Durability Bar

Engraved plates hold their data because the characters are physically cut, not printed: two-ply plastic for indoor equipment and control panels, and engraved metal for washdown, outdoor, or high-temperature service. Adhesive backing works on clean flat housings; screws or rivets are the safe choice on textured castings and anywhere heat or vibration lives.

For OEMs and Machine Builders

Serialized nameplates are a place small manufacturers quietly lose hours — someone fills a spreadsheet, someone orders, someone matches plates to machines. Ordering engraved plates in serialized batches (same layout, incrementing serial and date fields) turns that into a ten-minute task per production run, and custom engraving is typically far cheaper than branded plates from equipment vendors.
