Lamacoid vs Vinyl Labels vs Printed Stickers: What Belongs on a Control Panel
"Lamacoid" is panel-shop slang for an engraved two-ply plastic plate — and the fact that only real buyers use the word tells you it is the industry default. Here is when it earns that position, and when a vinyl label honestly is the better tool.

The Three Contenders
Engraved lamacoid: two-layer plastic where the engraving cuts through the colored cap to expose the core. The legend is part of the material — it cannot fade, smear, or peel.
Vinyl lettering / printed vinyl: adhesive film with printed or cut text. Fast and cheap up front, with lifespan set by the ink and adhesive.
Laminated printed stickers: office-printer labels in a plastic sleeve or laminate. Fine for a junction box in a closet; out of place on anything a customer or inspector sees.

Where Vinyl Genuinely Wins
Curved or irregular surfaces, very large text (stripes, banners, floor marking), temporary identification during commissioning, and disposable shipping/asset labels. If the label will be gone in a year by design, vinyl is the right spend.
Where Lamacoids Are the Standard
Panel and device identification, NEC-required markings (110.21(B) wants permanent, non-handwritten field labels), nameplates, valve tags, and anything outdoors. UL 508A panel shops spec engraved plates almost universally — a panel with peeling stickers invites questions about what else was done cheaply.
