Solar Rapid Shutdown Labels: NEC 690.56(C) Placement and Wording Guide
Rapid shutdown signage is the last thing installed and the first thing the inspector looks for. NEC 690.56(C) spells out the wording almost verbatim — which makes it one of the easiest labels to get exactly right.

What 690.56(C) Requires
Buildings with PV systems that have rapid shutdown must carry a permanent label at each service equipment location (or an approved readily visible location) telling first responders what the rapid shutdown does. The code specifies a title — "SOLAR PV SYSTEM IS EQUIPPED WITH RAPID SHUTDOWN" — in capital letters at least 3/8″ high, with the applicable diagram/wording for the shutdown type.

The rapid shutdown switch label goes on or within 3 feet of the switch. Check your code cycle: 2017, 2020, and 2023 editions differ in array-boundary details, and your AHJ decides which applies.

Permanence Is Part of the Requirement
NEC 110.21(B) requires field-applied labels to be suitable for the environment — and a service wall or roof edge is full sun. Printed vinyl reflective labels fade to illegibility in a few years; engraved UV-stable plastic keeps its contrast for the life of the system because the letters are cut into the material, not printed on it. Inspectors have begun flagging faded PV labels at system additions, so permanence protects the re-inspection too.
