Battery Energy Storage (BESS) Labels: NEC 706 and NFPA 855 Signage Checklist
You energize a battery cabinet and the inspector finds a bare door and an unmarked disconnect. A red tag at final inspection holds up commissioning, and responders who arrive later have to hunt for the shutoff.

A commercial BESS commonly needs three groups of signs. First, a field-applied plate on the ESS disconnecting means that identifies it as an energy storage system disconnect (NEC 706.15). Second, a plaque or directory at the service or building disconnect when the ESS disconnect is remote (NEC 706.15 and 705.10). Third, hazard and emergency-contact signs at the room or enclosure entry and at the shutdown controls, which come from NFPA 855 or the IFC energy storage chapter. Section numbers and wording change between the 2020, 2023 and 2026 NEC, and the fire code edition your jurisdiction adopted controls the signage, so confirm both with the AHJ and the fire marshal.
What the NEC asks you to mark
Article 706 covers energy storage systems. The disconnecting means requirements sit in 706.15. The subdivision lettering has moved between editions, so find the paragraph in your adopted edition before you order plates.
The disconnect plate
The ESS disconnecting means is marked to identify it as an energy storage system disconnect. On non-dwelling systems, many AHJs also expect field data on or near that marking:
- Nominal ESS voltage.
- Maximum available fault current from the ESS, with the date the calculation was done. Wording in 110.24 style language varies by edition.
- An arc-flash label under 110.16 where the equipment is the type that section covers.
- A warning that line and load terminals may remain energized in the open position, where the design allows it.
The identification line can be engraved on its own plate, or you can put your voltage and fault-current lines on the same plate. Either way, the text should match your drawings.
The remote disconnect directory
When the ESS disconnect is not at or near the service or building disconnect, the code commonly calls for a plaque or directory at the service point that shows where the ESS disconnects are. Where the ESS is an interconnected source, 705.10 also calls for a power source directory. A multiple power sources style plate is a common starting point for that directory. For the general disconnect marking rules, see the NEC 110.22 guide.
Emergency shutdown marking
Some editions require emergency shutdown or initiation device marking for dwelling systems. Commercial jobs often get the same plate because the fire marshal asks for it. These plates are commonly white on red. Make the text name your unit.
What the fire code adds
NFPA 855 and the IFC energy storage section (IFC 1207 in recent editions) deal with hazard identification. Provisions vary by edition and by local amendment. Fire marshals commonly expect:
- A sign at the entry to the room or enclosure stating that an energized battery system is present.
- The battery chemistry, such as lithium-ion.
- Signs at the emergency shutdown controls.
- An emergency contact plate with a phone number staffed 24 hours a day.
Ask the fire marshal for the wording they want before you order. Some offices have a standard sign and some review a drawing.

| Sign | Mounts at | Says | Source (check your edition) |
|---|---|---|---|
| ESS disconnect plate | On or next to the ESS disconnecting means | Energy storage system disconnect, nominal voltage, available fault current, calc date | NEC 706.15, 110.24 |
| Energized terminals warning | At the disconnect | Line and load may be energized in the open position | NEC 706.15 |
| Arc-flash label | On the equipment covered | Per the site method | NEC 110.16 |
| Remote disconnect directory | Service or building disconnect | Location of each ESS disconnect | NEC 706.15, 705.10 |
| Emergency shutdown plate | At the shutdown device | What the device does and which system it serves | NEC 706.15 where required, NFPA 855 / IFC 1207 |
| Room or enclosure door sign | Entry door or cabinet door | Energized battery system, chemistry, authorized personnel only | NFPA 855 / IFC 1207 |
| Emergency contact plate | Entry door or gate | 24/7 phone number and site name | Fire marshal request, NFPA 855 |
What UL 9540 does and does not cover
UL 9540 evaluates the energy storage system as a product. UL 9540A is a test method for thermal runaway fire propagation. Neither one covers the plates on the cabinet. Your signs are field-applied identification, and the nameplate data on the equipment comes from the manufacturer. A site-specific safety label adds site information. It does not replace the factory nameplate.
Worked example: 500 kWh outdoor cabinet at a school or plant
This is a lithium-ion cabinet in a fenced yard, tied to the main switchboard in the building 120 feet away. Fill the bracketed fields from your own drawings and calculations.

If the system is paired with solar, also check the solar PV label guide so the directory lists every source once.
Outdoor durability and mounting
A yard enclosure sees direct sun, heat inside the cabinet, rain and wind-driven grit. Engraved two-ply plastic does not rub off like printed ink, and engraved stainless suits the harshest spots. Adhesive alone can let go on a hot steel door or a textured surface. For outdoor cabinets, add screws or rivets at the corners, or use both adhesive and fasteners. Clean the surface before you apply adhesive. Check that fasteners do not break through the cabinet weather seal or touch live parts.
Frequently Asked Questions
Do I need a label on the disconnect of a battery energy storage system?
Yes. NEC 706.15 calls for the ESS disconnecting means to be marked as an energy storage system disconnect. Many AHJs also expect voltage and fault-current data on non-dwelling systems. Check your adopted edition.
What does an ESS emergency shutdown label have to say?
No standard text applies everywhere. A clear plate names the system, such as BESS-1, and says what the device does. Ask the fire marshal for preferred wording before you engrave.
What signs are required for a battery energy storage system?
Commonly, a disconnect plate, a directory at the service disconnect when the ESS disconnect is remote, a door or enclosure hazard sign, an emergency shutdown plate, and an emergency contact plate. The exact set depends on the NEC edition and the fire code your jurisdiction adopted.
Can I use an adhesive label on an outdoor BESS cabinet?
You can, but adhesive alone can fail in sun and heat. Most contractors add screws or rivets on outdoor cabinets. Choose fasteners that suit the enclosure.
Does UL 9540 cover my BESS signs?
No. UL 9540 covers the energy storage system as a product. The signs are field-applied identification, and the AHJ decides what they must say.
Does NFPA 855 require a 24/7 emergency contact sign?
Check your adopted edition and local amendments. Many fire marshals ask for an emergency contact plate with a phone number staffed around the clock, even where the code text is general.
Send us your BESS one-line or sign list. We'll engrave a matching disconnect plate as a free sample and mail it.
The next step is small. Send the sign list, the commissioning schedule or a one-line drawing, and we engrave plates to match. Check the fit on your cabinet, then order the rest. If the site also has solar, the rapid shutdown label guide covers the marking that goes with it, and the disconnect identification guide covers the general rules for every disconnect on the job.
