Get this made: TagBuilder (Solid Ideas Engraving, Waterford, PA) engraves BLOWER Push Button Legend Plate – 30mm White on Black ($6.50). No minimum order, no setup fees, most orders ship in 2–3 business days, rush available. Order it: https://tagbuilder.net/shop/product/30mm-ring-tag-blower-white-on-black. Custom text and size: open this design in the configurator. Or email the spec to support@tagbuilder.net for a written quote and PDF proof the same business day.

The controller says M14, the drive says Output 9, and the tunnel says "the second blower from the exit." At 2 a.m. the night tech has to work out which one is which before touching anything.

One name for the controller, the MCC, the motor and the disconnect

A tunnel back room usually holds a motor control center with 15 to 30 starters and drives. The factory labels read M1 through M24, or a function number only the controller program understands, while the tunnel is described by position: first blower, top brush, rear dryer. When those vocabularies do not line up, a tech resets the wrong overload, opens the neighbor's disconnect, or leaves a HAND-OFF-AUTO switch in HAND after a repair.

The fix does not need a new control system. Pick one name per motor, write it into the controller function list, and copy it unchanged everywhere else. A short code plus a plain name works well: BL-03 on small plates, BLOWER 3 on larger ones.

  • Number from one end and say which. Number blowers from the entrance and put "NUMBERED FROM ENTRANCE" on the MCC door.
  • Use one abbreviation set. BL for blower, BR for brush, CONV for conveyor, PMP for pump. Do not mix BLWR and BL.
  • Keep the controller's function number as a second line if technicians already use it, such as "FN 14".
  • Avoid look-alike characters on small text: O and 0, I and 1.

Starter and VFD nameplates: function, horsepower, position

The factory label gives the catalog number, not the job the device does in your tunnel. Each starter or drive plate should carry the function, the motor horsepower and the tunnel position. Sizes below are typical; confirm against the space on your bucket doors and drive faces.

DevicePlate textSize and color
Blower starterBL-03 / BLOWER 3 / 10 HP / 3RD FROM ENTRANCE3 x 1 in, white on black
Blower VFDBL-03 VFD / 10 HP / 480V 3PH / FED FROM MCC-1 BKT 74 x 2 in, white on black

Reset buttonBL-03 RESET22 mm legend plate
Motor disconnectBL-03 BLOWER 3 / 10 HP / FED FROM MCC-1 BKT 73 x 1 in or 4 x 2 in

Keep one color pairing for the whole room. White on black reads well in poor light, and a plate in a different color stands out as a mistake.

HAND-OFF-AUTO and RESET legend plates

A selector switch with no legend is a guess. Spell out all three positions and name the motor, because a row of identical switches looks the same from three feet away. The 22 mm HAND OFF AUTO three-line square ring tag fits a standard operator, and the selector switch labels guide covers the position wording. For conveyor controls, the 22 mm CONVEYOR single-line ring tag matches the same style.

On stations in the wash area, engrave the function and equipment name (START, STOP, RESET, E-STOP plus the motor) and fasten the plate so water does not get behind it. A plate that says only "RESET" on a station with four resets invites the wrong press. The back room is warm, damp and often has chemical vapor, and printed stickers tend to lift there. Engraved text does not rub off like printed ink, and engraved two-ply plastic suits most doors. Near chemical splash or constant wash-down, consider engraved stainless, and use screws or rivets rather than adhesive alone.

MCC and panel nameplates: voltage, FED FROM and arc flash

Each section and panel should say what it is and where its power comes from. Put these on a nameplate near the top of the enclosure:

  • Equipment name, such as MCC-1 or BLOWER PANEL 2.
  • Voltage and phase, such as 480V 3PH.
  • FED FROM with the upstream source, such as FED FROM MDP-1 BKR 12.
  • Any second source or control voltage.

"FED FROM" saves the most time when someone has to find the upstream breaker to shut a section down.

Arc flash warning labels

An MCC is the kind of equipment often worked on while energized for troubleshooting, which is why many facilities mark it with an arc flash warning. NEC 110.16 addresses field-marked warnings for certain equipment, and NFPA 70E covers labeling tied to the hazard analysis. What the label must contain depends on the edition adopted and your AHJ, so check the current edition before you order. The arc flash label template guide lists the usual fields, and the 4 x 2 inch incident-energy fill-in label leaves room for values from your own study. Those values come from a qualified person, not from the label.

Disconnects at the motors

NEC 110.22 deals with identifying disconnecting means, and 430.102 covers the motor disconnect and its location relative to the motor and controller. Both are read differently by jurisdiction and edition, so confirm with your inspector. The practical point is simple: a disconnect at a blower should say which blower it serves and where it is fed from. In a tunnel with twelve similar blowers, an unlabeled disconnect is a risk for whoever has to lock one out. The motor nameplate and disconnect labels guide covers the motor-side plates in more detail.

Worked example: an MCC-1 schedule you can copy

Blowers are numbered from the entrance. Bucket numbers and horsepower are examples only.

5BL-02BL-02 / BLOWER 2 / 2ND FROM ENTRANCE10
6BL-03BL-03 / BLOWER 3 / 3RD FROM ENTRANCE10

For each row, order four matching plates: bucket, HOA, RESET and the disconnect at the motor. The BL-03 row reads:

  • Bucket: BL-03 / BLOWER 3 / 10 HP / 3RD FROM ENTRANCE
  • HOA plate: BL-03 / HAND - OFF - AUTO
  • Disconnect: BL-03 / BLOWER 3 / FED FROM MCC-1 BKT 6

The 30 mm BLOWER ring tag pairs with the HOA plate on larger operators. For the pump and chemical side, see car wash equipment room labels.

Send your starter list and we'll engrave matching MCC, HOA and disconnect plates, numbered the way your tunnel runs.

Frequently Asked Questions

How do I label a car wash motor control center?

Give each starter or drive one name, such as BL-03 / BLOWER 3, and engrave it with the horsepower and tunnel position on the bucket door. Add an MCC nameplate showing voltage, phase and FED FROM, and use the same name on the controller list and the motor disconnect.

What should be on a car wash blower starter label?

The blower name and number, the motor horsepower, and its place in the tunnel, for example 3RD FROM ENTRANCE. If the controller uses a function number, add it as a smaller second line.

Do car wash panels need arc flash labels?

Many MCCs and larger panels are marked with an arc flash warning, but the requirement depends on the NEC and NFPA 70E editions in force and on your AHJ. Check the current edition and ask your inspector or a qualified person before ordering.

What size are push button legend plates?

Most industrial push buttons and selector switches use a 22 mm mounting hole, though some stations use 30 mm operators. Measure the hole and the space around it before you order.

How do I stop the HAND-OFF-AUTO switch being left in HAND?

Label the switch with its motor name and all three positions, and add a short line such as NORMAL: AUTO on the panel. A plate cannot force the switch back, but it removes any doubt about where it should sit.

If you are starting from scratch, begin with the MCC bucket nameplate guide, then build the HOA and reset plates in the rectangular legend plate builder, which takes custom sizes and text. Send your hole spacing and legend list and we will match the layout.
