What Has to Be on the Nameplate

UL 508A treats the nameplate as part of the panel's listing, not a courtesy label. An inspector checking a panel against its file expects to find a specific set of markings on it, and if one is missing or doesn't match what's in the panel, that's an open item at final inspection. The core list is short but each line has requirements behind it:

  • Manufacturer identification — name, trademark, or UL file number tying the panel back to the shop that built it.
  • Supply voltage, phase, frequency, and full-load current — the electrical characteristics the panel was built to accept.
  • Short-circuit current rating (SCCR) — a single number, in amps, with a documented basis behind it.
  • Industrial Control Panel designation — the plate identifies what the assembly is.
  • Enclosure type rating — the UL Type number for the enclosure, not just “NEMA rated.”
  • Wiring diagram or drawing index number — ties the physical panel to its as-built prints.
  • Suitable for use as service equipment — only where the panel is actually built and listed for that use.
  • Disconnect and multiple-source markings — required when the panel has more than one power source.

Manufacturer Identification and Traceability

The nameplate has to identify who built the panel — company name or registered trademark, plus the UL file number under which the panel is listed. This is what lets an AHJ or a UL field representative trace the panel back to the shop's UL 508A procedure and Follow-Up Service inspection results. Most shops add a date code or serial number here too, even though it's not strictly required, because it makes tracking and revision history easier down the line. If your manufacturer identification isn't linked to an active UL file, the rest of the markings don't mean much — the file number is what an inspector actually checks against.

Voltage, Phase, Frequency, and Full-Load Current

These four values describe what the panel expects to be fed and what it will draw. Supply voltage is the rated operating voltage (or range) the panel is designed for — 480Y/277V, 240V, 600V, whatever applies. Phase and frequency (typically 60 Hz in North America) round out the source description.

Full-load current (FLC) is calculated, not guessed — it's derived from the connected loads using the applicable NEC Article 430 methods for motor loads plus any additional non-motor load, and it has to match what's actually installed in the panel. A common inspector finding is a nameplate FLC that doesn't reconcile with the panel's actual load schedule after a field change order added a drive or heater circuit without updating the tag.

SCCR: The Rating and Its Basis

The short-circuit current rating is the number that tells an installer the maximum available fault current the panel can withstand without creating a hazard. It's marked in amps RMS symmetrical at a stated voltage — for example, 10,000 A at 480V.

What trips shops up isn't the marking itself, it's the basis behind it. UL 508A Supplement SB lays out how a shop determines SCCR: either by testing, or by the component method, where the panel's rating is set by whichever component in the fault current path — breaker, disconnect, contactor, terminal block — has the lowest individual rating. If nobody documents which component set the number, or the calculation wasn't redone after a component swap, the tag is now wrong even though it still shows a specific value. Enclosure Rating, Service Equipment, and Disconnect Marking

Enclosure type rating is marked using the UL Type designation (Type 1, Type 12, Type 4X, and so on) that matches the actual enclosure the panel is built in — not a generic “NEMA rated” claim. A Type 12 enclosure with a Type 1 nameplate, or vice versa, is a mismatch an inspector will catch by looking at the door gasket and the vent openings.

The phrase suitable for use as service equipment only belongs on the plate when the panel is actually built for that purpose — bonding provisions, a main bonding jumper, and a listed service disconnect all have to be present to back it up. Adding it because a customer asked, without the construction to match, is a listing problem, not a convenience.

Where a panel has more than one source of power — a second feed, a generator input, a UPS tie — each disconnecting means has to be marked to indicate its purpose, per NEC 110.22, unless the layout makes the purpose self-evident. Two things matter beyond what's written on the plate: where it's mounted and how long it lasts. Inspectors check this by opening the enclosure the way it will actually sit in the field, not on the shop floor with the door wide open.

Durability means the marking has to hold up to the environment the panel lives in — heat inside an enclosure, washdown outside one, UV on an outdoor lineup. What Inspectors Flag

  • SCCR marked on the tag but no calculation or component basis in the build file.
  • Enclosure Type on the nameplate that doesn't match the physical enclosure.
  • Nameplate mounted where a wireway cover or duct blocks it once the panel is installed.
  • Full-load current that doesn't reconcile with the as-built load schedule after a field change.

Legend Plates and Device Identification Inside the Panel

The nameplate covers the panel as a whole. Inside it, legend plates identify individual devices — pushbuttons, selector switches, pilot lights, terminal blocks, the main disconnect — and those should match the reference designators on the wiring diagram the nameplate points to. A tech troubleshooting a fault shouldn't have to guess whether “PB-1” on the print is the start button or the e-stop; the legend plate on the panel face should say so in the same language as the drawing.

Does every industrial control panel need a UL 508A nameplate?

Only panels built and labeled to UL 508A carry these specific markings — a panel that isn't going through that listing process doesn't need a UL-format nameplate, though most of the same information (voltage, current, manufacturer) is still good practice to include. What SCCR should I mark if nobody has calculated one?
